II. Narrative Section
Project Justification (Essay)
Project Description: Rehabilitate and restore the adobe siding and windows at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, Historic Fort Museum. All work will be compliant with the requirements of SHPO to maintain the historic value of the building. This project would restore adobe finishes that have deteriorated over time, repair windows with historically accurate materials and remove the parapet coping to restore historical accuracy. This project would also include a 1,500 square foot shade/protection structure sympathetic to the historic structure. Adobe work should be completed by a mason experienced in rehabilitation of this type of construction.
Project Justification: The adobe has deteriorated to a point that visible vertical holes are forming in the natural bulges of the existing adobe. Removal of the coping to restore historical accuracy, providing an overhead protective structure and restoration of the adobe is necessary at this time to prevent a loss.
Project Background Information: This is a historic building, constructed in 1855 of adobe masonry, and wood frame windows. Rehabilitation was performed approximately 10 years ago on the adobe. at that time coping was placed at the top of the walls in an attempt to reduce erosion due to rainfall. These copings seem to have directed the water flow to specific areas of the adobe, causing greater damage. The windows have deteriorated over the years of the buildings life, air gaps are now in most if not all windows. This allows dust and insects into the building. These items are regularly triggering the fire and burglar alarms, causing rapid response by staff and emergency responders.
