II. Narrative Section 
Project Justification (Essay)
Project Description: Replace eleven existing laboratory fume hoods, controls, ducting, fans and accessories as required to bring the system to current health, safety, and energy standards. The existing hoods are original to the building (completed in 1977) and have reached the end of their service life. The existing system is energy inefficient and lacks appropriate flow monitors and controls.
Project Justification: Laboratory fume hoods provide essential protection for DRI's research scientists. Health and safety codes require that many processes and experiments be conducted within fume hoods to protect the health of researchers and other faculty and staff who work within the building. The existing fume hoods are 35 years old and have reached the end of their service life. Replacing the fume hoods will also reduce the amount of energy used by building ventilation systems.
Project Background Information: The existing fume hoods lack controls and safety monitors. In some instances, fume hoods are not matched to the processes underway in the laboratories. A review of the Maxey Science Center was conducted in 2006 by the ISES Corporation; their engineers recommended replacement of the fume hoods at that time.

(Short Essay): DRI will, by necessity, continue to use the existing fume hoods. Energy costs will remain high, and limitations to work underway in the laboratories will continue. Failures may be expected to increase as the system continues to age.
Health, Life Safety, and/or Legal Issues
Please describe any health, life safety, and/or legal issues that will be resolved by completing this project (Short Essay): Replacement will decrease the chances of failures that may interrupt experiments or endanger researchers due to lack of appropriate laboratory ventilation. Installation of appropriate storage cabinets for under hood storage of chemicals will also increase hazardous material storage capacity as outline in the International Fire Code.
